How Barbie met Margot Robbie in the 1950s and came back to life in a 2023 film

The Barbie doll, first created in the 1950s by Mattel's Ruth and Elliot Handler couple, has become an icon for nearly 70 years. Its appearance is a signature feature of Barbie dolls, with long blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim waist. The doll's popularity has grown over time, with various versions being released since then, including the astronaut Barbie in 1961, black Barbie in 1980, and Andy Warhol's pop art Barbie in 1986.

The movie 'Barbie', directed by Greta Gerwig, will be released in Korea on the 19th. The film follows Margot Robbie, who lives in 'Barbie Land' where she can become anything she wants, discovering a crack in the portal connected to the real world, and 'Ken' (Ryan Gosling) and an unexpected journey to solve it.

The movie also stars Ryan Gosling, who has shown three-dimensional acting in movies like 'Babylon', 'Suicide Squad', and 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'.

The Barbie doll has faced numerous controversies since its birth in 1958, with the appearance of a typical Barbie being an unrealistic figure of 50kg and 36-18-33 for a 175cm tall adult. This has led to criticism for causing social problems at the time.

In 'Talking Barbie', the character Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, was established in the early 1960s by the publication of a novel with a Barbie doll as the main character.

However, there have been films that have changed the appearance of Barbie dolls to match the current trend. For example, 'Toy Story 3' revealed the full-fledged existence of Barbie dolls, with Barbie dolls appearing as independent characters alongside Ken.

The story revolves around Andy, who accidentally sends all his toys, including Woody and Buzz, to Sunnyside, where they are gathered and ruled by a tyrant named Lasso.

In 'Barbie,' director Greta Gerwig has drawn women who have expanded themselves without conforming to the framework of the world through her films 'Lady Bird' (2018) and 'Little Women' (2020). Christine, the main character, shows an attitude of trying to live as a lady bird that she built herself.

Greta Gerwig expressed her desire to portray "Barbie in many ways" through 'Barbie', highlighting the process of Barbie going from Barbie Land, a recreation of the 1950s, to the real world due to a cracked portal.

The film's portrayal of Barbie in the real world is expected to be reborn with the touch of Greta Gerwig.

Director Greta Gerwig and art director Sarah Greenwood spent significant time researching and examining pink elements to create a colorful and beautifully crafted film. The set and production were executed with the best production crew, emphasizing the importance of a happy atmosphere in the film.

The use of stage-only paint, including fluorescent pink and pale pastel pink, was also used to create a unique feeling and visuals. Pink paint was used for props and structures, including costumes, slides, kitchens, and dressing rooms.

The movie's delicate directing and the use of pink tones create a world beyond imagination, with 'Barbie' discovering a crack in the portal connected to the real world and 'Ken' solving it. The film depicts the unfolding story while going on an unexpected journey.
